I took this photo this week. This is part of the view from my writing desk. (My writing desk looks out over my roof to two neighbors’ yards.) I have been admiring the golden orange glow of the maple leaves and wanted to capture the color before it gets swept away.
To me, trees are a constant visual reminder of change. In the foreground of the photo, you can see the cute, little apple tree that my neighbor just planted. It’s funny, the second essay that I ever posted on this blog, about a year and a half ago, was about losing our favorite apple tree to the soaking rains of Tropical Storm Irene. I grieved over that tree. I loved its presence and still notice its absence years later. I told my neighbor that I am looking forward to witnessing the growth of her trees; she planted a few of them.
Change has been a consistent theme on my blog. The change I am making to Everyday Essays is to stop the weekly Friday Inspiration emails, at least for now. I know that many of you get so much out of reading these so I was hesitant to stop. I learn a lot from writing them and I like to share what I learn. I am ready, though, to share my essays with more people. To do so, I need to change my direction. Submit to different outlets. Learn what works best.
I am not abandoning the blog completely. I created it with loving intention and will figure out, in time, what its role will be in the future.
I am excited for the next part of my journey.
I am embracing the unknown rather than being frustrated by it.
For any of you who have been contemplating change on some scale in your life, I hope you go for it. Making the decision and taking that first step in a different direction is liberating (and a little scary).
If you’d be willing to send your positive thoughts my way as I seek new outlets for my essays, I’d be most thankful.
I will send out an update on Everyday Essays in the New Year of 2018.
Be well until then.
